THIS IS IT BOYS!: Sarawak head coach Robert Alberts (centre) talk to his players during a training session at the State Stadium.

KUCHING: The Crocs are not Manchester City that splurge billions to buy instant success but the youthful Sarawak team, built around local talents, are steadily making their presence felt in Malaysia's football arena.

Although labelled as 'whipping boys' by some local pundits, Sarawak shrugged off the 'taunt' by surprising Kelantan on Tuesday, making those self-same arrogant commentators eat their words with a performance that even impressed national coach Datuk K Rajagobal.

It has been confirmed that Sarawak will be fielding the same team that almost upset the Malaysia Cup defending champions when they take on another group C favourite KL Felda United at MBPJ Stadium, Kelana Jaya, tonight.

This game is very important for Sarawak because they must start winning points after losing on home ground to Kelantan on Tuesday.

Furthermore, KL Felda United must be stopped from securing a second victory after taking three points away to Johor FC also on Tuesday.

To have a realistic chance of making the second round, Sarawak must win tonight or at least draw. Only two teams from each group will qualify for round two.

A positive away result will also help to further boost fans support following a creditable — albeit losing – start in the grand opener in front of 20,000 home supporters at the State Stadium.

A non-issue

Playing away to KL Felda United should be a non-issue for Sarawak because the MBPJ Stadium would likely be near empty. In fact, this particular Sarawak squad had been very consistent in the Premier League, winning them promotion to the Super League after finishing the first runners-up.

They beat the Premier League champion PKNS Selangor in the second round although they were let down by inconsistencies in the first.

The average age of the squad is 24 with its budding stars barely in their 20's.

Sarawak's most promising young talent Ashri Chuchu almost found the net against Kelantan but his powerful shot was saved by excellent goalkeeping from Mohd Shahrizan Ismail who did not let in any goals in four outings although playing second fiddle to Malaysia talismanic goalkeeper Khairul Fahmi Che Mat.

Crocs captain Zamri Morshidi must be very careful to avoid suspension after collecting his first yellow card against Kelantan. Obviously frustrated by the turn of events in the high-stake game against the East Coast giants, he did very well to win the ball but was a big letdown for goofing up many passes.

The below-par passing from midfield to striker Bobby Gonzales stood out like a sore thumb that night.

And sadly, when the midfielders got it right, Bobby would either misfire or dribble once too often.

The same problem was also very obvious with young left back Mazwandi Zekeria who, on many occasions, passed directly to the opposing players for reasons best known to himself.

Solo runs

The Sarawak players showed too much respect for the Kelantan stars.

They must venture more and start making solo runs against the opposing defenders who, in their zest to stop them, may be forced to commit a foul in the danger zone, hence serving up a real scoring chance for the Crocs.

The Sarawak players have the skills and ball control but must start having the confidence to do the unthinkable that star players like Safee Saili and Norshahrul Idlan do during a match.

Such maturity, once achieved, will make Sarawak a team to beat in the Super League because they are now playing very high tactically disciplined football under Robert Alberts.

Normally, when a player is marked, a thinking team mate would dribble into the opposing defenders to draw them out, hence freeing up the marked player from his minders and creating a chance for a kill.

This is where Sarawak's young players are still found wanting as they often try passing to their marked man and give the ball away easily, leaving themselves open to counter attacks as a result.

The Sarawak defenders did this and were punished by Kelantan.

Mohd Hairol Moktar's failure to see Norshahrul Idlan lurking in front of Chun Keng Hong gave the national striker the opportunity to intercept the pass. To add to the misery, Chun lost his footing and Norshahrul made no mistake in drawing first blood.

As for the second goal, Norshahrul did what he knew best in a tight-marking game.

He dribbled into Sarawak defence wall and as all eyes were on him, S Chanturu made a run from the blind side to connect with an intelligent through pass. The move appeared simple but it took a pair of very confident and experienced players to pull off.

Frank appraisal

Alberts was very frank when he said not many players were good thinkers – and that's the biggest difference between a good player in the top league and an average one in the lower league.

Those present at the Crocs' training sessions will always hear Alberts reminding his charges to think.

In a post-match SMS, Alberts said the players were able to match Kelantan's fitness level but let down by costly errors.

Asked whether the players were feeling the strains playing against Kelantan, he replied: "They were not too tired but we made mistakes."

Throughout the one-month preparation for the opener against Kelantan, Alberts had been very consistent and frank about his team's chances against the Super League champions.

It would take a herculean effort to beat Kelantan, knowing every Red Warrior is among the country's finest, not forgetting they are paid to win every match.

Unlike the youthful Kelantan side, KL Felda United are parading veterans and former national players in the likes of Nizaruddin Yusuf, Chow Chee Weng, Liew Kit Kong, Muhamad Khaironnisam Sahabudin Hussain and others.

However, they also have a good striker in 24-year-old Farderin Kadir who scored two goals against Johor FC.

Farderin who played for Malaysia's U-20, and U-23 teams, was roped into the senior team for 2008 Merdeka Tournament but did not get to play any match during Tournament, and is a pale shadow of Norshahrul Idlan.

Alberts refused to speculate on the result but his charges are expected to give KL Felda United a run for the money. And tonight, it's all up to the young Sarawak players to prove what they are capable of.

Bukan niat nak mencoret panjang pasal hubungan diorang berdua ni.

Isteri aku selalu pesan macam tu masa kami bertunang dulu.

Islam mengajar kita supaya tidak memperbesar-besarkan hal pertunangan kita, cukup sekadar ahli keluarga terdekat saja. Kenapa kita tak nak ikut sedangkan kita mengaku mengucap dua kalimah syahadah?

Maaflah, bukan mencari kesilapan sesiapa, tapi sekadar pandangan.

p/p/s: Maaf kalau ada tersilap info. Tak follow sangat sebenarnya berita ni.
